Engineering Software

Overview

Pumpdim™ is a highly specialised software tool I designed for Metso. It is used for the selection and sizing of slurry pumps. The software helps users choose the right pump based on specific criteria.

This tool is primarily used in industries like mining and mineral processing, where slurry handling is critical. It ensures efficient pump selection and improves system productivity.

Important! This project is under NDA, I am unable to share specific details or visuals of PumpDim™, as it is proprietary.

Challenge

Metso’s old version of Pumpdim™ was outdated, with an unresponsive design, local installation, and frequent bugs. The poor user experience made the tool inefficient and frustrating to use. To modernise the software and improve usability, Metso commissioned a complete redesign to create a more accessible, cloud-based solution.

My biggest challenge was stepping into the shoes of mining engineers, requiring me to grasp complex physics rules and specialised industry concepts.

Process

Kickoff Workshop

The design process started with a three-day UX and Usability workshop that I organised. Mining engineers (the end-users) and stakeholders from around the world came together to share user needs and ideas. This workshop helped us align our goals and set a strong foundation for the project.

Collaborative Development

I worked closely with local engineers and the PumpDim™ support team for several months to create and refine wireframes. We held brainstorming sessions and gathered feedback to ensure our designs met user requirements and technical needs. I maintained regular communication with the development team to make sure our concepts were feasible.

Creating the MVP and UI Kit

Once we developed a solid Minimum Viable Product (MVP), I created a UI Library that included design components, styles and guidelines. This kit went through multiple revisions and updates based on team feedback, ensuring the final design was both user-friendly, branded and visually refreshing.

Outcome

The launch of the new PumpDim™ has significantly improved user experience for engineers in the field, as well as income for the client. User feedback has been positive, highlighting an improved ease of use and decreased need for support.

What made it memorable?

What made this project special was the personal growth it demanded. Collaborating with mining engineers from around the world pushed me outside my comfort zone as I learned complex physics and specialised concepts. Immersing myself in their world to understand their challenges and translating that into a user-friendly design was sometimes confusing but ultimately fulfilling.

Excellence Award

For my work on this project, I received the Enfo Excellence Award in 2019. Metso's business owner, has frequently praised my impact on the project, which was delivered on time and within budget. My role as an interpreter between the customer and Enfo has been recognised as a valuable contribution to the project's success.
